The secretariat of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition has written to Wafula Chebukati, chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), to explain the deadline for presidential candidates to announce their running mates ahead of the August 9 elections.
The coalition is disputing IEBC’s directive that presidential hopefuls submit the names of their running mates by April 28, when political parties file lists of their aspirants for various elective seats.

“The question is, who has the constitutional mandate to decide who the running mate would be? And that constitutional mandate under Article 148 is that of the presidential candidate. So, the process that we are going through now is nominating persons who will be the running mates,” said Paul Mwangi, a lawyer in the Raila Odinga-led Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
According to the protest notice filed by Azimio, the actual time for the submission of the running mates is between May 29 and June 6, 2022, when each candidate would deliver nomination papers.
“Once the person has qualified and has submitted their papers to IEBC, and they have been cleared, they can now ask you about your candidate’s identity.
The debate over running mate in the coalition party is still raging, with the Wiper leader insisting that he must run alongside Raila in the August 9 election.
A group of women leaders in the coalition party backed Narc leader Martha Karua as Raila’s deputy on Monday, April 18, just one day after Kalonzo claimed the position.
The competition for a running mate is expected to ignite antagonism between individuals and members of parties.
