Uhuru-Raila Allies are Now Threatening To Impeach Speaker Justin Muturi After Joining Ruto’s Coalition, Kenya Kwanza.
Politicians affiliated with the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition have threatened to impeach National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi for supporting the Kenya Kwanza coalition.
Muturi’s decision to join Deputy President William Ruto’s camp, according to Narok Senator Ledama ole Kina, Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, and Kieni Member of Parliament Kanini Kega, will affect how he conducts House business.
The Uhuru-Raila allies spoke in Nyeri on Tuesday, April 12, urged that Muturi retire and make space for the election of an impartial Speaker, failing which they threatened to support a vote to impeach him.
“Muturi ought to resign and allow a non-partisan leader to succeed him. He is the Speaker of the National Assembly and not one for Jubilee Party. By choosing sides, he has already created the perception that he will lean towards one side,” Kega, a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta argued.
Sabina Chege, who has been at the forefront campaigning for Azimio la Umoja presidential aspirant, Raila Odinga, added that they would let the Speaker decide his own fate.
“He should do an honourable thing and resign. But if he wants to continue earning a double salary, then we leave it to God.
“I don’t think there is a need for unnecessary drama in Parliament where we know we have few days to the General Election,” Chege cautioned her colleagues against creating a crisis at the National Assembly.
She termed Muturi ungrateful for ditching Uhuru, who made him the third most powerful leader in the country.
“He failed while contesting for a parliamentary seat. We know where he came from, yet he has seen that the best gift he can give Uhuru is joining the other side,” Chege lamented.
Ole Kina also argued that the Speaker had already tendered his resignation by joining the DP’s side.
