10 teachers feared dead, scores injured after accident along Thika Road

A tragic road accident along Thika Road has claimed the lives of at least 10 teachers, leaving the education fraternity in mourning.

The teachers died when a 33-seater matatu lost control and rammed into them outside City Primary School in Ngara on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

14 other teachers sustained injuries and were rushed to Guru Nanak MP Shah Hospital and Kenyatta National Hospital for emergency treatment.

The teachers had gathered at the school to participate in the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) elections scheduled for the day.

Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene as the matatu veered off the road and struck the group of teachers who were waiting outside the school.

Videos obtained showed the school bus overturned on its side with rescue operations underway at the accident scene.

First responders who arrived at the scene were met with a devastating sight of multiple casualties scattered across the roadside.

“Upon arrival, we noticed that there were multiple casualties and they had multiple injuries, head injuries, decapitations, and abrasions,” a witness recounted.

Other witness accounts indicate that the accident occurred when the matatu experienced brake failure, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle along the busy highway.

“The motor vehicle lost control as a result of brake failure and crashed into roadside guardrails and overturned,” stated a witness.

The impact threw some teachers several meters away, while others were trapped under the wreckage of the overturned vehicle temporarily.

Kuppet elections at the school were immediately suspended following the tragedy as officials rushed to assist victims and coordinate emergency response efforts.

Traffic along Thika Road was temporarily disrupted as police cordoned off the accident scene to facilitate rescue operations and investigations into the incident.

By the time of the publication of this story, no government official had come forward to respond to this tragic accident.
