After the students complete their national exams, the teachers’ employer plans to promote over 15,000 teachers.
Nancy Macharia, CEO of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), told MPs on Tuesday that the compressed school calendar had an impact on the process.
“Immediately after exams come to an end, we shall advertise and start the process of promoting the teachers to different grades,” Macharia said.
The government will spend Sh1.4 billion to promote the 15,522 available slots.

Macharia clarified that the vacancies were the result of natural attrition.
The MPs questioned why the majority of teachers had been in the same job group for more than ten years.
Julius Melly, the committee chair, inquired how much it would cost TSC to promote teachers.
“There is an outcry that promotion is based on nepotism and other corruption matters,” Melly said.
“And this seems to be affecting most teachers who have been serving in the same position.”
Macharia responded that promotions are always merit-based and subject to availability.
She went on to say that the commission already has Sh1.4 billion to spend on promotion.
“We promoted everyone in 2017,” Macharia said.
