At least 20 fishermen are feared dead after a suspected attack by merile militias at the Kenya-Ethiopia border

At least 20 fishermen are feared dead after a suspected attack by merile militias at the Kenya-Ethiopia border.

According to sources, the attack was allegedly undertaken by suspected Merille militias from Ethiopia on Saturday evening, February 23.

The attackers are also believed to have extended their acts to pastoralists in the Lopeimakate and Lotiira areas.

Turkana North MP Ekwom Nabuin, while condemning the attack, called for help from the Ministry of Interior to manage the situation.

“We are receiving disturbing reports of the killing of more than 20 fishermen in the Todonyang area of Lake Turkana by the Dassanech of Ethiopia. The numbers could be higher. The situation is extremely bad, rescuers must move fast to secure our people. The massacre is happening on Kenyan soil which is occupied by well-armed Ethiopian militias (Dassanech),” said Ekwom.

According to reports, the attackers ambushed the victims on their boats; they allegedly shot at them indiscriminately.

It is believed that the attack was sparked by the recent killing of three Ethiopian fishermen on the same lake, therefore it was a retaliation.

The alleged killer Dassanech men later seized the deceased fishermen’s boats and fishing gear and took off from the scene.

Survivors of the attack who took refuge in the reeds were later rescued and rushed to the Lowarengak Health Centre for medical help.

Police arrived at the scene to assess the situation, this as they combed through the reeds to rescue any body or survivor trapped therein.
