20 students lost consciousness after police lobbed tear gas into school while battling protesters in Kawangware.

Twenty students collapsed on Friday, May 26, after anti-riot police officers lobbed teargas in their school in Kawangare Estate in Nairobi.

According to reports, police officers engaged Kawangware traders in running skirmishes as the pupils were attending their morning classes.

A tear gas canister reportedly went off within the school’s compounds causing a commotion within the institution as pupils and teachers alike scampered for safety.

However, a number of pupils were unfortunate as they were hurt by the tear gas canisters’ soaking smoke.

The affected students were later taken to various hospitals around Kawangware Estate where they received treatment for breathing difficulties.

Some students were, however, placed on basic First Aid treatment at the school compound, and asked to take a rest.

It was observed that the students who remained in school were in a stable condition and did not need direct medical admission at hospitals.

Meanwhile, the protests led to disruption of transport along Naivasha Road, Nairobi, after disgruntled traders engaged police officers in running battles.

The protest also affected adjacent roads including those leading to Riruta, Wanye and other parts of Kiambu County.

The traders were reportedly agitating against decisions by the Nairobi County administration to demolish their kiosks allegedly constructed on footpaths and feeder roads.

Police had a hard time clearing the roads on which the protesters had burnt tyres and tore down President William Ruto’s campaign posters.

One of the protesters was also shot and injured during the fracas with the demonstrators claiming that they had not been issued with eviction notices.

“They had not served us with any notices; police just started attacking people and one of us was shot and injured as a result,” protester said.

They also accused the police of indiscriminately attacking area residents.
