3 Kenyans among 5 killed in UAE tower fire

Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu has confirmed that three Kenyans lost their lives during the deadly fire at Al Nahda tower in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates (UAE).

In a statement on Tuesday, April 15 evening, PS Njogu said the three Kenyan nationals are among the five casualties who lost their lives during the inferno.

The Diaspora Affairs PS also sent her condolences to the families of the deceased.

“I regret to inform you that 3 Kenyans are among 5 casualties that died following a deadly fire that occurred in Sharjah, UAE on Sunday.

“My deepest condolences to the families of the deceased diaspora. We stand with you to offer support during this difficult time,” Njogu stated.

The fire broke out on Sunday, April 13, at around 11.31 AM on the 44th floor of the 52-storey residential building.

Four of the casualties are reported to have fallen to their deaths while attempting to escape the flames, while the fifth casualty died of cardiac arrest, believed to have been triggered by the shock of the incident.

The Al Nahda residential tower is inhabited by more than 1,500 people of different nationalities working in the UAE.

Reports indicate that 19 other people suffered injuries during the fire incident and were rushed to the hospital for medical care.

A multi-agency team comprising the police, civil defence, national ambulance, and the Emirates Red Crescent Authority was deployed to ensure a speedy response.

The UAE authorities have launched investigations into the cause of the fire.
