41% of Kenyans prefer Anne Amadi as next IEBC chairperson - TIFA
Kenyan pollster TIFA has said that 41% of Kenyans prefer to have Anne Amadi as the next Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson.
In a report released on Wednesday, TIFA said that a majority of these Kenyans were in Nairobi and Nyanza.
Meanwhile, another 23% prefer the leadership of Charles Nyachae, 15% supported Erastus Ethekon and 12% vouched for Abdulqadir Ramadhan.
“Ramadhan and Ethekon may have influence in specific zones but lack national appeal,” read the statement in part.
Only four candidates sailed through the selection process for the electoral body’s chairperson role and the report has been presented to President William Ruto.
TIFA added that respondents aged 18 to 34 (44%) are more inclined to support Anne Amadi, while those aged 35 and above show a slightly stronger preference for Charles Nyachae.
Some of the reasons why most respondents preferred Amadi include gender preference and her community-regional origins.
On grounds of qualification and experience, most respondents (56%) preferred Nyachae, 40% supported Ramadhan, 32% Ethekon and 25% Amadi.
Further, respondents voted for Ramadhan as the most preferred candidate who lacks bias, while only 18% voted for Amadi under the same criteria. 24% of the respondents preferred Nyachae and 30% preferred Ethekon.

However, a majority (55%) of Kenyans are not confident that the vetting was merit-based, with many maintaining that public trust over the process has been strongly influenced by the credibility of past elections.
“Those who believe previous elections were fair tend to trust the current process, while those who view past elections as flawed express deep skepticism,” added TIFA.
This comes amid calls to fill critical positions in the national electoral body.
The positions became vacant on January 16, 2023, when the late chairperson Wafula Chebukati announced his departure, along with commissioners Abdi Guliye and Boya Molu, whose 6-year terms had expired.
After disputing the 2022 Presidential election results, former IEBC Vice Chair Juliana Cherera and commissioners Irene Masit, Justus Nyang’aya, and Francis Wanderi were dismissed.
The four former Commissioners, known as the ‘Cherera Four,’ cast widespread doubt on the credibility of last year’s election, claiming that the results declared by Chebukati were never tabulated as required.
They were accused of working with high-profile Azimio la Umoja coalition operatives to favour Raila Odinga’s bid.
