Ethiopia closes schools amid military operations against the rebel forces
Ethiopia has declared the shutdown of secondary schools across the country to assist the country’s ongoing national appeal in the midst of military operations against TPLF rebel forces.
According to state-affiliated Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC), the Ethiopian Ministry of Education announced that all secondary schools throughout the country will be closed for a one-week period to assist in harvesting plantations of those who are on the frontlines in the fight against rebel fighters.
The latest move comes as the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF), backed by regional allies and popular support, ramped up military operations against the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
The Ethiopian National Defense Forces (ENDF), in collaboration with regional forces and militia fighters, has taken control of major cities and towns in the Amhara and Afar regions, which border Tigray.
ENDF and its associate troops have demonstrated strong mobilization against rebel forces in the northern region of Ethiopia since Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed entered the frontline battle last week.
Ahmed has appealed to “all patriotic Ethiopians” to join him on the front lines of the fight against the TPLF’s army.
The battle between the TPLF, which used to run Tigray, and the federal government began on November 4 last year in Ethiopia’s northernmost Tigray province and has since expanded to adjacent Amhara and Afar regions.
The Ethiopian House of People’s Representatives has also authorized a six-month state of emergency to halt the rebel group’s advance and maintain peace and security in the country.
