USA commits to open Moderna manufacturing hub in Nairobi, the first of its kind in Africa
USA to open Moderna manufacturing hub in Nairobi striking an agreement with the Kenyan government.
With support from the US government, Kenya will soon establish a Moderna Vaccines Manufacturing Hub in Nairobi.
This came up after meetings between US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
On Thursday, the two held discussions about a range of topics involving their bilateral relations with the United States and Kenya.
“Kenya and the United States have for many decades shared strong bilateral and multilateral relations,” Gachagua said.
In order to set up its first mRNA production plant in Africa, Kenya and Moderna signed a memorandum of agreement at the beginning of March.
The facility would cost $500 million (Sh57.5 billion), according to the American biotechnology company, to make messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines.
Researchers are optimistic that mRNA technology could possibly be applied to a host of health problems beyond COVID-19, such as malaria and tuberculosis.
The facility will focus on manufacturing vaccine drug substances, with potential plans to expand its capacity to also include the filling of vaccine vials “as early as 2023, subject to demand.”
Meg Whitman and DP Rigathi Gachagua also discussed the process to allow Millennium Challenge Corporation to release a $60 million (Sh7.28 billion) grant towards the improvement of the Transport System in Nairobi.
DP Gachagua stated that the cooperation and relations between the two states can only grow stronger and deeper for the benefit of future generations of both countries.
