Activist Hanifa Adan escapes abduction attempt in Nairobi on Saturday night

Human rights activist Hanifa Adan says she narrowly escaped an alleged abduction on Saturday night in Nairobi.
Human rights activist Hanifa Adan says she narrowly escaped an alleged abduction on Saturday night in Nairobi.
Taking to social media, on Sunday, July 27, Hanifa claimed that two unidentified men tried to force her into a car moments after she alighted from a bus.
One of the men, according to Hanifa, was seated beside her in the bus, and after alighting, the man kept on insisting on taking her home in his brother’s car, which he claimed was nearby.
Despite resisting the suspicious offer and claiming that she would like to take an online taxi, the man kept on pushing, and after a few moments, he went and came back with his “brother” and the car.
“I alighted from a bus, and this guy I’d been seated next to kept insisting on taking me home. He said his brother was nearby with a car, and I should go with them. I told him I’d already ordered an Uber, but he wouldn’t let it go and kept pushing for a good few minutes as I kept saying no,” Hanifa said.
“Then he actually went and came back with his brother, and now both of them were insisting I get into their car. That’s when I started getting really scared. I asked them straight up why I would go with two grown men I don’t know, at night? Why are you insisting so hard?” she added.
Fearing for her security, Hanifa threatened to attract the attention of the nearby people by screaming, a move that resulted in the two men finally bolting off.

Following the incident, Hanifa said that she would have to use pepper spray and other self-defence tools to protect herself.
“The first guy kept saying, ‘I’m your brother, I don’t trust Uber drivers.’ And I told them if they didn’t leave, I would scream. They got mad and finally left. I need to buy that paper spray,” Hanifa quipped.
In the past year, abduction cases involving Kenyan activists, both inside and outside the country, have been on the rise, especially since the anti-finance bill protests in June 2024.
Just last week, on Wednesday, July 23, Kenyan activist Mwabili Mwagodi reportedly went missing in Tanzania, months after activist Boniface Mwangi, alongside his Ugandan counterpart Agather Atuhaire, were allegedly abducted in the same country.
In a statement on Sunday, July 27, Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid confirmed that Mwagodi was found dumped on the Kenyan coast on Sunday morning.
