Kenyan activist Mwabili Mwagodi has allegedly been arrested and is being detained at the Lunga Lunga Police Station after he was allegedly blocked from leaving the country on Sunday, February 15.

In a statement on his official X account on Monday, Mwagodi claimed that he was stopped from exiting the country on his way to Dar es Salaam yesterday, on a Red notice issued against his passport.

Mwagodi claims that the alert was issued in early 2025 by a Directorate of Criminal Investigation Officer (DCI) stationed at the Mazingira House along Kiambu Road.

“On my way to Dar es Salaam on 15th February 2026, I was denied exit out of Kenya at the Lunga Lunga border by the Immigration department due to a Red Notice issued against my passport around Jan/Feb 2025 by a DCI officer – Serious Crimes Unit at Mazingira House on Kiambu Road,” Mwagodi said.

“The officer issued the warrant of arrest but did not indicate the crime I committed and/or what I am to be charged with,” he added.

The activist claims that police heads at the Lunga Lunga Police Post say they are waiting for further instructions from the DCI “on what to do with him”.

“I was handed over to DCI at the Lunga Lunga Border Police Post, and they are waiting for instructions from Mazingira House on what I am being detained for, and what they should do with me,” Mwagodi said.

“The OCS and DCI officer I am under the custody of visited the morning of 16/02 in my jail cell and informed me that they are still waiting for instructions from DCI Mazingira House on what to do with me,” he added.

Last year, Mwagodi was abducted in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, where he had been working for a hospitality company and disappeared for days.

He went missing around 10pm on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, while travelling to Dar es Salaam by public transport.

His phone went silent during the journey, and attempts by his wife to reach him proved unsuccessful.

Mwagodi was found dumped in Kinondo, Kwale County, on July 27, 2025, after being missing for four days.
