AirAsia announces suspension of services from Nairobi to Malaysia

AirAsia has announced that it will be suspending its direct flights between Nairobi and Kuala Lumpur beginning September 1, 2025, citing a network optimisation initiative.

In a statement sent to customers and travel partners, the airline expressed regret over the move, acknowledging the disruption it may cause to passengers’ travel plans.

“We regret to inform you that AirAsia will be suspending services from Nairobi to Kuala Lumpur and from Kuala Lumpur to Nairobi starting September 1, 2025, until further notice as part of a network optimisation initiative.

“We understand this news may be disappointing and will impact your clients’ travel plans. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused,” the communication read.

As such, the airline has put in place a series of service recovery options to assist passengers affected by the route suspension.

Customers holding tickets for travel beyond the suspension date can consider a flight change and move their travel to an earlier date.

“Passengers may choose to move their travel to an earlier date before August 31, 2025, subject to availability,” the communication added.

Additionally, for customers unable to change their travel plans, the airline is also offering full refunds.

“Alternatively, passengers may request a full refund to their original form of payment. Our team is here to assist you with either option or ensure a smooth process.

AirAsia X inaugurated its direct service between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on November 15, 2024.

This made AirAsia X the first low-cost carrier from Southeast Asia to establish a direct air link to Kenya’s capital.

The route operated four times weekly using Airbus A330-300 aircraft, each with a capacity of up to 285 passengers.

The launch was celebrated by both Malaysian and Kenyan officials, who viewed the new connection as a means to boost tourism and cultural exchange between the two regions.

“This new direct connection between Kuala Lumpur and Nairobi presents a tremendous opportunity for growth in tourism, trade, educational exchanges and people-to-people ties between our two counties.

“Kenya has always been a prime destination for travellers, and now with affordable connectivity, I am confident that this route will further boost bilateral ties and promote Kenya’s rich heritage and natural beauty,” High Commissioner of Kenya to Malaysia Ekitela Moru said.
