Al-Shabaab militants kill 5 non-local quarry workers in Mandera
Five quarry workers were killed early Tuesday morning, April 29, in Bur Abor village, Mandera County, in what local authorities suspect to be an attack by Al-Shabaab militants.
The victims, all non-local workers employed at a nearby quarry, were targeted around 7 AM, according to eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations.
Mohamed Abdiaziz Roble, the Village Administrator of Bur Abor, issued a brief incident report confirming the fatalities.
“At approximately 7:00 AM on 29th April 2025, a tragic security incident occurred in Bur Abor village, resulting in the deaths of five non-local individuals who were working in a local quarry,” he stated.
Authorities noted that the attack has spread fear and alarm among the local community.
“The incident has caused heightened fear and concern within the village,” Roble added.
Local security personnel were promptly dispatched to the scene and have launched an investigation as efforts to identify the victims and notify their families kick off.
“Local security authorities were immediately informed and are actively investigating the matter.

“The identities of the victims are being confirmed, and steps are being taken to communicate with their respective families and home communities,” said Roble.
In response to the attack, Roble said village authorities, in coordination with law enforcement, have increased security patrols and urged the community to remain alert.
“The village administration, in collaboration with law enforcement, is taking necessary measures to enhance security and ensure the protection of all residents and visitors.
“The community is urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities,” he noted.
