Martha Karua says all presidential aspirants will back one candidate against President William Ruto.

The National Rainbow Coalition (NARC) party leader Martha Karua has hinted that all presidential aspirants for the upcoming 2027 elections in Kenya will unite to back a single candidate.

Karua said the decision will be necessitated by the primary goal of defeating the incumbent, President William Ruto.

Her statement was in response to a social media user’s suggestion that each region in the country should nominate its own presidential candidate to face off with Ruto in 2027.

Karua, in her reply, said that national unity precedes over regional or personal political ambitions.

“Let every aspirant grow their brand knowing at the back of their minds that Kenya is bigger than any one of us, and that towards the end we will all converge and agree on a single candidate to ensure Ruto must go,” she wrote.

Karua, who has been a fierce critic of Ruto’s government, has shown signs that she might be actively involved in the 2027 polls following her Azimio ticket defeat in 2022.

Her call for unity comes at a time when political alignments are in flux, and the opposition is looking for ways to consolidate power against Ruto’s administration, which has been facing criticism over economic policies and governance issues.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua ignited speculations of an alliance with Karua ahead of 2027 elections.

During a visit to Karua’s Gichugu home in Kirinyaga on Saturday, January 25, Gachagua said there is need for leadership that resonates with many Kenyans and expressed a desire to unite with like-minded individuals who are committed to the country’s progress.

The former DP expressed satisfaction with the renewed political alignment, viewing it as a step toward strengthening leadership in the Mt. Kenya region.

He noted that Karua’s experience and determination would be instrumental in advancing the region’s interests and pledged to seek her counsel frequently, along with other leaders, to drive positive change.

Karua welcomed the collaboration, describing it as a powerful alliance that would push for accountability in governance. She called on other like-minded individuals to join their efforts to advocate for national reforms.

The meeting marked the first major political engagement between Gachagua and Karua since his removal from office as deputy president.

The Gachagua-Karua engagement also coincided with NARC Kenya’s ongoing restructuring following its exit from the Azimio coalition.

Karua outlined plans to revamp the party to into a new one, called People’s Liberation Party, set to be launched in February.

She reaffirmed her readiness to collaborate with various political groups, including those associated with Gachagua, in a bid to challenge President William Ruto’s administration.
