Governor Nyong’o responds after reports emerge of police invading homes in Kisumu to assult residents.

On Friday, July 21, Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o addressed viral footage showing police officers assaulting locals inside their homes.

The governor claimed that while upholding order is the police’s principal duty, it was distressing to see them break into homes and brutally treat innocent people.

“Even after stopping members of the public from exercising their democratic rights to picket over the high cost of living imposed by the Kenya Kwanza government, the police armed with all manner of weapons are pursuing innocent residents deep into the residential areas and brutalizing them,” the governor complained.

He added that Nyalenda, Manyatta, Obunga, and Bandani communities were the hardest hit by police abuse. The illegal operation also unfairly singled out weaker populations, such as boda boda riders.

Nyong’o expressed his displeasure that some of the people the police had attacked in their residences had not taken part in the anti-government demonstrations.

The county administrator requested the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to look into the incidents and make sure the offenders are found.

He emphasized that the brutality displayed by the police personnel was not what the people of Kisumu deserved.

“I appeal to the people of Kisumu to remain vigilant and expose those taking advantage of the protests to destroy property because we had agreed to conduct peaceful demonstrations,” he added.

In the videos doing rounds online, police officers armed with batons were captured assaulting the residents outside their homes.

In one instance, the police were seen going after a resident who was seeking safety in a mud house. The officers pulled him out and hit him while he was on the ground, asking him to caution protesters from taking to the streets.
