Army officers appeared on national television in Gabon to say they have taken over power from President Ali Bongo.

Another coup was underway in Africa Wednesday after officers announced they had taken over power from President Omar Bongo.

The army officers appeared on national television to say they had nullified election results that declared Bongo the winner, effectively ending his family’s 53-year hold on power.

One of the soldiers said on TV channel Gabon 24: “We have decided to defend peace by putting an end to the current regime.”

This, he added, was down to “irresponsible, unpredictable governance resulting in a continuing deterioration in social cohesion that risks leading the country into chaos”.

Bongo was declared the winner in the results announced on Saturday.

The electoral commission said Mr Bongo had won just under two-thirds of the votes in an election the opposition argued was fraudulent.

Mr Bongo came to power when his father Omar died in 2009.

In 2018, he suffered a stroke which sidelined him for almost a year and led to calls for him to step aside.

The following year, a failed coup attempt saw mutinying soldiers sent to prison.

The action in Gabon comes in the wake of a similar action in Niger where President Mohamed Bazoum remains detained since July 26 when the army announced a take-over.

Presidential guard commander General Abdourahamane Tchiachi has since proclaimed himself leader of the junta in Niger.

This raises concerns on the increased coups in Africa in recent years.
