Geoffrey Gitobu, a returning officer for the Gichugu constituency in Kirinyaga county for the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), collapsed and died mysteriously on Monday, August 22, in the evening.
According to early accounts, the IEBC official collapsed in front of the IEBC offices in Nanyuki, Laikipia county.
He was taken by ambulance to Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital, where doctors immediately declared him dead.
The deceased was on a three-day break from work when he chose to visit his family in Nanyuki; he was scheduled to report back to work on Wednesday, August 24, according to Kirinyaga county Returning Officer Jane Gitonga.
Gitobu is said to have visited the Nanyuki IEBC offices to print some forms when the unfortunate happened.
A police report indicated that the cause of his death was not immediately identified and that an autopsy would be conducted to reveal the cause.
His death comes just days after Embakasi East Returning Officer, Daniel Mbolu Musyoka, was found murdered in Kajiado county.
Detectives are still investigating the heinous murder after CCTV footage emerged showing his last moments before vanishing.
According to the CCTV footage, Musyoka was last seen speaking to a rider on Church Road, Tassia, in the Embakasi East constituency.
On the motorbike was a pillion passenger, who also engaged the IEBC official for a while before leaving.
Musyoka stood at the same spot for one minute, 28 seconds, during which he received a phone call. He then left with the time stamp of the video reading 11.30 am, August 11.
The police launched a manhunt for the rider and pillion passengers captured in the footage.
