Another Kenyan athlete and world U20 champion, Kipyegon Bett dies in hospital after battle with liver disease.

Another Kenyan athlete Kipyegon Bett on Sunday mid-day passed away while battling an illness at the Tenwek Hospital in Bomet County where he had been undergoing medication.

The 2016 World U20 champion in the 800m race fell ill roughly a month ago before his hospital admission last Monday. He was 26 years old.

According to his sister Purity Kirui, the athlete was unwell in the past and was once admitted to the AIC Litein Hospital as an outpatient before his condition deteriorated and was transferred to Tenwek Hospital where he passed away.

“He has been unwell for about a month and was treated at AIC Litein Hospital as an outpatient. On Saturday his condition deteriorated and was referred to Tenwek Hospital for further tests,’’ Kirui told Nation.

Kirui, the 2014 Commonwealth Games 3,000m steeplechase gold medallist, revealed that his brother’s condition had deteriorated, and as a family, they were prompted to seek further medical assistance in a bid to save his life.

Athletics Kenya Director in charge of Youth and Development, Barnaba Korir, who has been in contact with the family, also confirmed his demise.

The athlete reportedly experienced some problems before his demise as he was vomiting blood for some time due to damage to his liver and other internal organs.

Bett went down the athletics history books when he won a bronze medal in the men’s 800m race during the 2017 World Athletics Championships.

He also won a silver medal in the 800m race at the 2017 World Athletics Relay Championships as he continued to display optimism of making it in the 800m race.

However, the athlete’s journey was cut short when he was banned from athletics and his career affected after he was accused of doping and banned for four years in 2018 for using doping substances.

He made a comeback to the track in 2022 and made a performance appearance at the 400m hurdles in the Kenya Track Meeting where he finished third.
