Atheists in Kenya demand the immediate release of "Yesu Wa Tongaren" as they ask the government to produce real Jesus

Atheists in Kenya demand the immediate release of “Yesu Wa Tongaren” as they ask the government to produce real Jesus.

The Kenya Atheist Society have questioned the detention of the self-proclaimed messiah, Eliud Wekesa “Yesu Wa Tongaren”

In a statement, the society called for the release of the cleric who has been detained for four days ahead of a mental assessment test.

Harrison Mumia, the society’s president, stated that the only way to prove Wekesa was on the wrong is for the police to produce the real Jesus.

“The police must produce the real Jesus if their claim is that this man is not the real Jesus Christ, Son of Yahweh! Our position is that Biblical “Jesus” is a fictional character, a construct created by the religions of Christendom. He never existed,” read the statement by Mumia.

Atheists say police are being overzealous Mumia accused the security agencies of being impulsive following their decision to arrest the controversial preacher.

He said as a society, they don’t see anything cultic about Wekesa’s practices and beliefs in the New Jerusalem ministry.

“Jesus of Tongeren exists and, as far as we are concerned, does not lead a cult. The police are being overzealous by arresting Jesus of Tongeren,” the statement continued.

In a ruling on Friday, May 12, Principal Magistrate Tom Olando allowed the police to detain the self-proclaimed Messiah for four days.

The magistrate further granted the investigating officers permission to subject the suspect to mental examination and conduct a search at his Tongaren home.

“Court allowed Yesu wa Tongaren to be subjected to mental examination and a search be conducted at his home,” said defence counsel Kennedy Murunga.

Wekesa is facing charges including radicalization, money laundering, acquisition, possession or use of proceeds of crime, and managing an unlawful society.

The self-proclaimed clergyman is also accused of writing or uttering words with intent to wound religious feelings, contrary to Section 138 of the Penal Code.

The police have also questioned his decision to abandon his birth name to Yesu Wa Tongaren, arguing that this is not allowed by the law.
