Atwoli defends Ruto from Raila's criticism that the President is becoming a dictator
Atwoli defends Ruto from Raila’s criticism that the President is becoming a dictator.
Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has differed with Azimio One Kenya Coalition party leader Raila Odinga on the assertion that President William Ruto is becoming a dictator.
Atwoli stated in a speech on November 26 that the country is far from being an authoritarian state.
Atwoli vehemently disagreed with Raila, saying, “We are not a dictatorial state, we are nowhere near there yet.”
The trade unionist argued that political figures should have the freedom to criticize Ruto since doing so is good for the democracy of the country.
“Those who are saying Ruto is a dictator are leaders at political space, let them talk because that is what they fought for,” he opined.
In an unexpected change of events, Atwoli, who had been a harsh opponent of Ruto in the run-up to the elections, began to praise him.
Atwoli lauded Ruto, saying, “This current government has supported free speech, and the president has not castigated anyone for criticizing him.”
He went on to caution politicians from saying anything that would sabotage the nation’s tranquility.
“Let people say what they want to say but we are not a dictatorial state and they should make sure their remarks do not upset the peace we are enjoying now,” he warned.
According to Atwoli, the majority of workers are in the unorganized sector, and they won’t be able to support themselves if there isn’t peace in the country.
On November 25, Raila said that Ruto was implementing “jungle rules” in advance of the 2027 general elections while supporting IEBC commissioners who were the subject of petitions in parliament.
Raila said in a curt statement that “the rule of law must prevail and not your jungle laws that you intend to introduce so as to subject Kenyans to a conveyor belt system of elections coming 2027.”
Martha Karua, the principal of Azimio, charged the president with directing the nation toward a dictatorship on November 18.
“We have seen in recent months’ cases being withdrawn, of fraud and others where the suspects are the people in power… Something is cooking in Kenya, and this is the making of a dictatorship,” Karua sounded a warning.
