Azimio affiliate parties demand Junet Mohamed resignation
Pressure is piling on National Assembly Minority Leader and Suna East MP Junet Mohamed as cracks widen within the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition.
The latest push came on Tuesday January 13 when seven affiliate parties formally demanded his immediate removal from all Azimio leadership positions.
The parties claim that Junet’s statements diminish former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s legacy and place the opposition alliance in an awkward position.
In a joint statement, the parties said they were surprised by what they termed reckless and defamatory utterances attributed to the Minority Leader.
“We however express our profound concern over the continued reckless and defamatory utterances by some Azimio La Umoja–One Kenya officials, especially the one Hon Junet Mohamed,” the leaders stated.
They argued that such comments risk deepening divisions within Azimio at a time when unity is critical in Parliament.
They insisted that Kenyatta’s tenure should be respected, describing him as a leader who safeguarded national cohesion and oversaw a peaceful transfer of power.
“We as the Azimio Parties demand the immediate retirement of Junet Mohamed from all Azimio leadership positions,” the statement added.
At the centre of the storm is Junet’s perceived closeness to the Kenya Kwanza administration, a claim his critics say weakens the opposition’s voice.

Some affiliate parties allege that he has not been forceful enough in championing opposition positions in the National Assembly.
The standoff is the latest chapter in Junet’s long-running internal battles within ODM and the broader opposition.
He previously faced backlash over alleged missteps during the 2022 General Election, including claims of sidelining key advisors.
Junet has also clashed with senior ODM figures including Secretary General Edwin Sifuna over party discipline and accusations of external interference in party affairs.
His political journey has been marked by rivalry, loyalty to Raila Odinga, and sharp exchanges with both allies and opponents.
The leaders of Azimio political parties finalized their ultimatum by demanding the immediate resignation of Junet Mohammed from all Azimio leadership Positions.
