Azimio calls for immediate investigation for alleged interference in printing of ballot papers by Ruto’s camp

Azimio calls for immediate investigation for alleged interference in the printing of ballot papers for this year’s election by Ruto’s camp.

Raila Odinga’s Azimio Coalition has now claimed there was ‘interference” in awarding the tender for the printing of General Election ballot papers by a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto.

The Aimio camp claims there was influence in the awarding of the tender to the Greek firm and Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula is at the center of it.

Inform Lykos (Hellas) SA was awarded a Sh3 billion contract by IEBC in October 2021 to supply and deliver ballot papers, a printed register of voters, statutory election result declaration forms, and election result declaration forms

According to a publication by the Daily Nation, Moses Wetang’ula in January last year invited the three Greeks to Kenya to discuss “investment opportunities”, and that nine months later, in October, of the same year, the same individuals landed the lucrative tender from the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) through their company, Inform Lykos (Hellas) SA Holdings.

The Daily Nation in its report claimed that the senator’s aide met with officials of the Greek company hired to print the ballot papers in June 2021.

It said that the aide, Joshua Abdalla Makokha, traveled to Athens to meet the officials.

The alleged interference with the printing of ballot papers Azimio claim is what Ruto is banking to aid in a scheme to manipulate results through “ballot stuffing and other electoral malpractices”.

Azimio calls for ballot printing investigation

Azimio coalition through secretary-general Junet Mohamed has demanded that IEBC in conjunction with the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) “immediately commence full and thorough investigations” on Senator Wetang’ula’s relationship with Inform Lykos (Hellas) SA, and that “immediate action be taken to protect the General Election from interference through the surreptitious introduction of electoral materials or other unlawful means”.

The Suna East MP added in the demand note that IEBC should immediately make public any information regarding the measures the commission has put in place “to ensure there are no lapses, both logistical and security, in the provision of electoral materials for the General Election”.

The scheme is to be executed through printed electoral materials to be surreptitiously smuggled into the country through the Kenya-Uganda border in Bungoma County with the aid of rogue and compromised officials according to Junet Mohamed.

Wetang’ula dismisses the claim

However, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetang’ula has denied any business relations with IEBC.

Wetangula has said the report by Daily Nation is malicious and false.

He also told the Orange Democratic Movement party to keep him off their election troubles.

“ODM must keep me out of their election woes and come to the reality that they are once again starring at a disastrous election outing,” Wetang’ula said.

“I have never had any business relationship with IEBC. I know nothing about ballot printing or any printing business for that matter!! I have no relationship of any kind with the person named in the story as Joshua Abdalla Makokha.”
