Azimio calls on the UN special rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly to take a keen look at unfolding police brutality in Kenya

Azimio calls on the UN special rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly to take a keen look at unfolding police brutality in Kenya.

Raila’s Azimio coalition is now collecting evidence of police brutality to file a case at the International Criminal Court (ICC).

This comes after police brutal forces witnessed in the handling of protesters in the series of anti-government protests.

The opposition claims it is attempting to involve the international community after the police used excessive lethal force, resulting in deaths and injuries.

“We are calling on the international community not to lose sight of what is happening in our land,” Wandayi said.

The opposition is turning to the UN with a request for assistance.

According to Paul Mwangi, the legal counsel for Azimio, the opposition has invited Clement Nyaletosti, the UN special rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and association, to closely monitor the developments in Kenya with regard to the handling of the protests and the infringement of the citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly.

The opposition claims it is also taking matters into its own hands by gathering proof of police action against protesters right from the Saba Saba protests to last week’s three days of protests.

The evidence according to Azimio will be crucial when it files a case against the government and the police at the International Criminal Court at The Hague.

The opposition further says it has already compiled a list of what it terms as persons of interest as it ramps up its own evidence gathering.

Azimio will also have a meeting on Tuesday to review the proof gathered so far ahead of Wednesday’s protests.

This as the leader of the minority in the national assembly called for a halt to what he says is rampant police brutality in Luo Nyanza.

“We are seeing a systematic onslaught on unarmed peaceful civilians by police or people who call themselves police, some are in uniform others are not, the kind of aggression and brutality we see in Luo Nyanza is something that has never been witnessed,” Wandayi added.
