Following a national blackout incident, Azimio Senator Edwin Sifuna alleges existence of powerful office in KPLC running crooked power supply scheme.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has claimed that he has access to information about the Kenya Power Lighting Company’s (KPLC) technique for selectively distributing energy.

Sifuna said on his X account, formerly Twitter, that while he was a member of the Energy Committee, he learned how the electrical provider ran a questionable power supply plan.

“In my time as a member of the Senate Energy Committee I have come to learn of a very powerful office at KPLC called a “dispatcher”. A person who has a view of all our power generation plants and decides whose power is “dispatched” (added to the grid) and when,” he wrote.

Sifuna added that there have even been reports of cheaper green energy producers being prevented from supplying energy so that the said dispatcher opts for electricity from more expensive thermal generators.

He has therefore stated that he has readied an amendment to the Energy Act to shed more light on how the dispatcher operates saying “Hapo kuna mchezo. The bill is ready for publication.”

Sifuna’s remarks comes the country witnessed a 12-hour nationwide blackout, the longest in history.

The power blackout affected critical infrastructure; that forced a brief closure of Kenya’s main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

Kenya Power, in a statement to newsrooms on Friday evening, stated that the outage was caused by a “general system disturbance.”

The utility’s board chair, Joy Mdivo, revealed that there was a blackout in its station in Turkana, which is key to the national grid.

“Turkana being down means a lot of power suddenly is not available to the grid, so the limited power that is there has been prioritized, and only some substations powered back up.
