Azimio leaders blocked from Bomas tallying centre as verification continues

Azimio leaders blocked from Bomas tallying centre as verification process of presidential results continues.

Leaders allied to the Azimio coalition were Sunday afternoon temporarily barred from accessing the national tallying centre at the Bomas of Kenya.

While trying to enter the Bomas premises, the leaders were locked out for hours and questioned why the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was preventing authorized presidential agents from entering.

The leaders, included, elected Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna, elected Siaya governor-elect James Orengo, Kisumu governor-elect Anyang Nyong’o, former Laikipia governor Nderitu Muriithi, and Makadara MP-elect George Aladwa.

This comes after on Saturday, commissioner Abdi Guliye ordered non-essential people out of the main auditorium where tallying was ongoing, saying only accredited party agents, media, observers and IEBC staff would be allowed.

The chief agent for Raila, Ndiritu Muriithi asked Chebukati to come clean with Kenyans.

“We find it suspicious that the electoral commission in coordination with police officers have locked out of the tallying center yet its our business being here?”Muriithi posed.

“How do you explain me being locked out of Bomas as the chair of the Azimio presidential campaign and as an accredited agent? Chebukati must come clean to Kenyans,” he said.

Normally when you are accredited, you are allowed to get to Bomas.

“We are explaining to the officers that what happens to Kenyans is on their hands,” he said.

Even though eventually they were allowed to access the venue, they were however barred from the auditorium where tallying is ongoing.

The security officials ushered them to the VIP lounge.
