Azimio responds after the arrest of Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang'o

Section of Azimio politicians questions the motive behind the arrest of the Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakang'o

Section of Azimio politicians questions the motive behind the arrest of the Controller of Budget Margaret Nyakango.

Voicing her concerns after the arrest, NARC-Kenya party leader Martha Karua argued that Nyakang’o is the target of attacks solely because she recently revealed financial irregularities in the government.

“Timing suggestive of harassment and intimidation, especially coming after her revealing testimony at Bomas. Those siphoning government money at Treasury are scot-free but the whistleblower is under arrest,” Karua wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

While appearing before the National Dialogue Committee (NADC0) in October at the Bomas of Kenya, the Controller of Budget faulted the National Treasury for budgeting corruption in the country.

“Exaggerations are in the Treasury and let me give one example. When I was doing the budget for consolidated fund services where my salary is paid from, I found that my salary is budgeted at 3 times what I’m paid and it was like that for all the state officers. I asked them why it is showing that way and I have not received the answer to date,” she told the committee.

Narok County Senator Ledama Ole Kina also said the arrest of CoB was a bad look for Kenya’s democracy and goes on to show how the system is crooked.

“Welcome to Kenya where the police take action on a complaint 7 years later … only crooks can survive in a rotten system.” Ole Kina remarked in a statement.

Ole Kina read a sinister motive and told the Kenya Kwanza government to amend the constitution and abolish the Controller of Budget’s (CoB’s) office instead of employing underhand tactics to frustrate her work.

“You don’t arrest the Controller of Budget her job is clearly defined in the constitution. If you have a problem with her role to oversee the implementation of the budgets amend the constitution” Ledama remarked in a statement.

On his part, Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi equated the arrest to political persecution and geared at blackmailing her to stop exposing corruption in government.

“She has been at the forefront of fighting corruption that is deeply embedded in both the central government and county government. We must celebrate stern astute women” Amisi stated.

Many observers linked the COB’s tribulations to a presentation where she accused some senior government officials in the Treasury of graft masterminded through budgeted corruption.

The controller of the budget was arrested on Tuesday in Mombasa and arraigned in court.

However, she has been released on a Ksh.2 million bond, with the option of a similar surety or Ksh.500,000 in cash after pleading not guilty to the charges before a Mombasa Court.
