President William Ruto is set to meet opposition leader Raila Odinga in the United States next week.
The two leaders are part of a delegation that will meet in Washington DC for the Africa Leaders Summit.
Raila Odinga flew from Kenya to the United States on Saturday, December 10, 2022, and is expected to remain for the next five days.
“He will be attending the meeting in his capacity as the African Union High Representative for Infrastructure Development,” a communication from his office said.
To that end, Mr Odinga announced that his plans to hold a political rally on Jamhuri Day had been postponed.
Meanwhile, President Dr. Ruto is expected to leave for the United States after presiding over the Jamhuri Day celebrations.
The Summit’s goal is to outline the United States’ commitment to African countries in terms of development and diplomatic ties.
According to a US State Department statement, it will also emphasize the importance of US-Africa relations and increased cooperation on shared global priorities.

All African heads of state have been invited by US President Joe Biden, and it is one of the most important meetings ever organized by the US.
President Ruto is also expected to meet with Kenyans living in the United States at the Washington Plaza Hotel.
Prof Charles Choti, one of the meeting’s organizers, stated that it will be the best opportunity for Kenyans in the US to interact with the Head of State.
Mr. Choti was chosen as the team leader for the meeting with the Head of State by Kenyan Ambassador to the United States Lazarus Amayo.
“It is a wise move for the President to reach out to the Kenyan diaspora. No other President before him has done what he is doing,” Prof Choti said.
