Blow to Mackenzie after TWO lawyers quit case citing intimidation

Two lawyers, George Kariuki and Elisha Komora, quit representing Pastor Paul Mackenzie after threats to their life

Two lawyers, George Kariuki and Elisha Komora, quit representing Pastor Paul Mackenzie after threats to their life.

On June 14, two lawyers who were representing controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie made an application to withdraw themselves due to increased threats to their safety.

According to reports, lawyers George Kariuki and Elisha Komora stated that since taking on the case, their consciences have continued to be troubled.

They also criticized the authorities for having difficulties reaching their client in advance of court sessions.

Attorney Kariuki emphasized the difficult circumstances Mackenzie faced while in detention, noting that he spent more than 60 days sleeping on the floor.

He expressed concern that the dire circumstances would cause Mackenzie to perish away before going to trial.

Following the exit of the two lawyers, the controversial pastor was left with advocate Wycliffe Makasembo who expressed confidence that he would represent Mackenzie to the bitter end.

He accused the government of trying to frustrate the proceedings of the case.

On Wednesday morning, June 14, Mackenzie, his wife Rhodha Mumbua and 16 other suspects appeared at Shanzu Law Courts to determine whether their detention period would be extended.

Some, however, collapsed within the court premises because their bodies were too weak. According to Senior Prosecution Council Jami Yamina, 16 of the suspects were on a 10-day hunger strike in solidarity with Pastor Mackenzie.

“We fear that some of them will lose their lives while in custody. The rest of them went on a hunger strike 10 days ago and refused to eat or drink water.”

“We have to address this matter now because we do not know if these people will be alive tomorrow,” Yamina stated.

Pastor Mackenzie, his wife and co-accused follower staged a hunger strike, while in custody, over Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki’s remarks that the pastor would remain in prison even if the courts released him.

“Mackenzie will not get out of jail. He will age in it. We pray that God gives him more years to see Kenya’s security prosper.”

“He will not get out of jail… Mackenzie will meet the wrath of God after jail,” Kindiki stated.
