Captain who flew General Ogolla and team was competent, experienced; Report

A report has revealed that the pilot who flew Chief of Defence Forces General Francis Ogolla and his team was competent and experienced.

In a military probe report released months after the crash, Captain Major George Benson Magondu was described as ever jovial and interactive with colleagues.

The report stated that the co-pilot was slightly reserved, which resulted in a blended team.

“The Captain was a very experienced and competent Pilot. He was jovial and very interactive with colleagues. The Co-Pilot, on the other hand, was a slightly reserved individual who communicated well when required. This was a good crew combination,” the report read in part.

According to the report, crew coordination was less likely to be a contributing factor to the crash.

The Military report stated that an engine malfunction caused the chopper crash that killed CDF Ogolla and other officers.

The Captain started his Ab-Initio Pilot Training at Kenya Air Force Flying Training School (KAF FTS) before proceeding to Starlite International Aviation Academy in the Republic of South Africa (RSA) from  April 2, 2016, to April 2, 2017.

The report stated that the pilot had a total of 1,731.40 hrs.

The Co-Pilot, on the other hand, joined Starlite International Aviation Academy for Ab-Initio Pilot Training on February 18, 2019, and successfully completed on January 17, 2020.

At the time of the crash, he had accumulated a total of 955.45 hrs.

Both Pilots were mission-ready in accordance with Flying Order Book (FOB), Squadron Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Categorization, Instrument Rating and Annual Aircrew Medicals.

The BOI concluded that the crew had sufficient flying hours to be considered above average Captain and Co-pilot, respectively.

The report concluded that the aircrew aspect was a less likely contributing factor.

The report further stated that Huey KAF 1501 departed Nairobi Wilson Airport for Chesitet.

The aircraft then flew to Chesogon via Kainuk, and during this time, the crew were in constant two-way communication with other relevant stations.

The report ruled out communication as less likely to be a contributing factor.
