Catholic Church in Embu supports Cybercrime Act approved by President Ruto
The Catholic Church in Embu has expressed strong support for the newly enacted Cybercrime Act, saying it will help promote morality and responsible use of social media among citizens.
The Church leaders believe the law will play a vital role in curbing the spread of harmful and insensitive content online.
Speaking during a Thanksgiving Mass held at Embu College, Embu Catholic Bishop Peter Kimani commended the government for taking steps to regulate the digital space. He noted that the rise in social media misuse has eroded moral values and encouraged disrespectful communication among users.

Bishop Kimani emphasised that freedom of expression should not be used as an excuse to harm others or spread falsehoods. He argued that some individuals have been insensitive in their online conduct, often posting content that damages reputations, promotes hate, and divides communities.
“The Cybercrime Act must be controlled,” Bishop Kimani said.
He urged young people, in particular, to embrace the values of truth, responsibility, and kindness in their digital interactions. According to the bishop, moral uprightness should extend to both offline and online behavior, as the internet has become a significant part of daily life.
The church leader also called on the government and communication authorities to ensure the law is applied justly, without infringing on legitimate freedom of speech. He noted that while regulation is necessary, it should not be used as a tool to silence constructive criticism or honest debate.
