Chaos in parliament as MPs approve motion to impeach CS Linturi

Members of Parliament (MPs) approve the proposed motion to impeach troubled Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mithika Linturi

Members of Parliament (MPs) approve the proposed motion to impeach troubled Agriculture Cabinet Secretary (CS) Mithika Linturi.

There was a moment of commotion in the National Assembly after MPs differed over the impeachment of Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi.

The commotion ensued after a section of legislators rose from their seats and began shouting as they demanded the immediate resignation of the Agriculture CS.

Adamant in their call, the MPs could be heard shouting, ‘Linturi must go’ as they vented their approval for the motion tabled before the National Assembly seeking to impeach Linturi.

Speaker Moses Wetangula was forced to momentarily suspend the proceedings as he called the MPs to order.

Despite efforts by the speaker of the National Assembly to quell the situation, the legislators maintained their stance as they continued to protest.

MPs led by Kathiani lawmaker Robert Mbui accused the CS of failing to tame the fake fertiliser menace, something the MPs noted had immensely affected the farmers.

“Kenyan farmers have already been disgruntled Mr Speaker. There are some farmers, who bought the fertiliser and when they took it to their farms, their crops failed,” noted MP Robert Mbui.

“As we vote today, let us vote with our conscious. We have talked about the issue of corruption from time immemorial,” the legislators added.

While dismissing the motion, Majority Leader and Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wah urged the mover of the motion, MP Wamboka to allow investigative agencies to complete the process first.

“NCPB is a semi-autonomous body and the State Corporation Act explicitly that a minister has no direct control over state corporation,” Ichung’wah commented.

However, despite the commotion, MPs approved the motion to impeach the troubled Agriculture CS Linturi.

In the vote taken on Thursday, May 2, 149 MPs vote to proceed with the impeachment process of CS Linturi.

For the motion to proceed, it required to garner support from at least one-third of the members of the National Assembly, totaling 117 members.
