Charlene Ruto mourns Albert Ojwang, calls for ‘generational ceasefire’
President William Ruto’s daughter, Charlene Ruto, has joined Kenyans in mourning the tragic death of Albert Ojwang, calling for national reflection and a “generational ceasefire”.
At the conclusion of a youth leadership forum Friday in Nairobi, Charlene led a moment of silence alongside 106 young leaders to honour the late Ojwang.
“As we concluded this week’s cohort on leadership conversations, I requested the 106 young leaders present to stand with me and observe one minute of silence for the life of Albert Ojwang,” she said.
Charlene admitted to grappling with deep reflection over the past few days, trying to make sense of the tragedy.
She described the incident as both painful and unfortunate, as she conveyed her condolences to his family.
“This is a painful, unfortunate and overwhelming loss. We share our deepest condolences with his family,” she added.
As a young Kenyan, she also used the opportunity to make a passionate appeal to the country to embrace a generational ceasefire.

“These regrettable incidents, extremity, and growing intolerance should challenge all of us to interrogate the environment and culture we want to live in, and create for the generations coming after us,” she said.
Her remarks come amid a wave of public outcry following the circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death.
Ojwang is said to have died at Nairobi Central police station last Sunday, where he was being held.
He had been arrested at his Homa Bay home, taken to Mawego police station in the county, before being transferred to Nairobi.
He was to face charges related publishing of defamatory statements on social media.
