Chelsea facing summer transfer window with further problems ahead
Chelsea facing summer transfer window with further problems ahead as they seek to bolster center-back ranks.
Chelsea’s new owners want to help Thomas Tuchel bolster his center-back ranks, but bigger problems are coming down the track for the club.
The consortium will also listen to Tuchel’s plans for new signings.
Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele is set to become a free agent when his contract expires at the end of June.
Chelsea have more pressing concerns
However, the biggest transfer concern for Chelsea right now is their defence.
They lost Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen and need replacements in this summer.
Sevilla’s Jules Kounde is a top target, with RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol also admired by Tuchel.
The departures of Rudiger and Christensen mean that Thiago Silva is currently the most senior Chelsea defender.
At 37, though, he does not have much longer at the top level.
Behind the Brazilian, Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah are options.
Also, Chelsea facing summer transfer window with Tuchel to have a big impact on the future of Romelu Lukaku at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea spent a club-record £97.5million on him last summer but he reportedly wants to return to Inter.
Lukaku spoke out against Tuchel’s tactics in December, blaming the German for his lack of match action.
In other news, Tuchel has been criticized for blocking the pathway for Chelsea’s young players at Stamford Bridge.
Part of Chelsea’s identity since Tuchel’s arrival has been based on using experienced players to manage and control matches.
Under Frank Lampard, there was a real focus on developing young players with the likes of Fikayo Tomori, Mason Mount, Tammy Abraham, Trevoh Chalobah, and Callum Hudson-Odoi all among those to establish themselves in the starting XI.
Yet now Tomori and Abraham are playing their football with AC Milan and Roma, respectively, while Chalobah and Hudson-Odoi are left on the fringes.
Sam Matterface and Holloway speaking on White and Jordan criticized Chelsea’s change of approach under Thomas Tuchel.
Matterface explained: “Chelsea have had a great reputation over the last couple of years for bringing through young players into the first team, but last year during the Premier League season not one minute was played by a teenager under Thomas Tuchel.
“If you look at Tottenham it was about four minutes over the season.
“It’s a very difficult league to break into unless something seismic happens like when Chelsea had a transfer embargo so three or four made it in at the same time.”
Holloway responded: “That’s my annoyance.
“Plenty of young players were playing under Frank Lampard, but Tuchel’s come in and put all of the old ones back in.
“That’s not the way forward for Chelsea, it’s not.”
