Governments of China and Hungary offer scholarships to Kenyan students who wish to pursue their education in the two countries.
Through a communique from the Ministry of Education released on Saturday, Hungary has offered 200 while China has offered 18 scholarships to eligible Kenyans.
Students who want to pursue undergraduate degrees (BA/BSc) in the disciplines of agricultural science, computer science and information technology, legal science, economic science, engineering science, medical and health science, and natural science may do so through the Hungary scholarships program.
Those who wish to study their Master’s (MA/MSc) in the fields of Agricultural Science, Computer Science and Information Technology, Legal Science, Economic Science, Engineering Science, Medical and Health Science and Natural Science and Doctoral (PhD/DLA) studies in any field of interest are also eligible.
It is also open for one-tier master’s (OTM) studies in both Bachelor’s and Master’s in the fields of General Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacology, Architecture, and Veterinary Medicine.
“The provisions covered by the scholarship include; tuition fee, accommodation/accommodation contribution for those who don’t live in the dormitory, Medical Insurance, and a monthly stipend,” the ministry said.
“Please note that these provisions do not fully cover all the costs of living in Hungary but are only a contribution to the living expenses and the students need to add their own financial resources in order to cover all living expenses in Hungary,” it added.
Students interested in the Hungary scholarships are expected to complete the Standard Scholarship Application Form.
They should then attach certified documents which include certified photocopies of ID, academic/ professional certificates, transcripts, Birth certificates, passports, and other testimonials.
The applications for the scholarships can be submitted either online or delivered to Teleposta Towers on or before December 8 for the Chinese government scholarships and on or before January 17 for the Hungary scholarships.
The ministry has however advised that the academic certificates from foreign institutions of higher learning must be recognised by the Commission for University Education (CUE).
The ministry has further noted that it is the designated agent for the Hungary and Chinese Government Scholarships.
“It is mandatory for all interested applicants to go through the Ministry’s preliminary selection process,” it noted.
“Preference for nominations at postgraduate level will be given to teaching staff in the Universities and University Constituent Colleges.”
The 18 scholarships by the China government to Kenyan students on the other hand are for Undergraduate, Masters’ and PhD in the academic year 2024/2025.

Eligible students for undergraduate programmes should have a minimum KCSE mean grade of B (Plain), should be less than 25 years of age, and should have an original KCSE certificate.
They should also have strong grades in major subjects that are key to the area of specialty preferred for the Chinese courses and Grade B in core subjects in the preferred field of study in Hungary.
They must also have completed their secondary education in the last three years.
For the Hungary scholarships, Postgraduate students will be expected to have graduated with a Bachelor’s degree upper second-class honors level for Master’s and have a relevant Master’s Degree for a PhD.
The applicants should be below 38 years for Masters and 45 years for PhD.
Applicants for masters in China programmes must have a Bachelors degree of at least Second Class Upper Division, be under 35 years of age while PhD applicants must have a relevant Master’s degree from a recognized University and must be under 40 years of age.
