Chwele Kabuchai Ward in Bungoma County is mourning the death of its long-serving Member of County Assembly (MCA), James Barasa Mukhongo, who passed away on Monday, August 4, while receiving treatment at a local hospital.
The Ford-Kenya party legislator had reportedly been unwell for a brief period, though members of his ward had been hopeful about his recovery.
Updates shared earlier had pointed to progress in his condition, with close associates expressing optimism about his return to active service. Unfortunately, that hope was cut short.
Ford-Kenya Party leader and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula confirmed the news through a heartfelt tribute shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.

“It’s with great pain and unimaginable sadness and loss that I announce the passing on of my MCA Hon. James Barasa Mukhongo of Chwele Kabuchai Ward,” Wetang’ula wrote. “Elected without a break for a record five terms, Barasa was Ch FK Kabuchai. RIP Baba.”
Mukhongo had served as MCA for Chwele Kabuchai Ward for five consecutive terms, an extraordinary record that speaks volumes about his leadership, consistency, and deep connection with his constituents.
Condolence messages have continued to pour in from residents, community groups, and fellow leaders, many of whom remember him as a diligent, humble, and people-focused leader.
“Hon. Mukhongo was not only a leader but a true servant of the people, a pillar in our community, and a voice for the voiceless. His dedication, humility, and tireless service to Kabuchai will be remembered for generations to come,” one local youth group wrote in tribute.
