The EACC detectives on Tuesday apprehended two officials from the Kakamega Civil Registration Department for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes from applicants seeking civil registration documents.
The duo, a Civil Registrar stationed at the Kakamega Huduma Centre and a Civil Registration Officer, are alleged to have solicited bribes to speed up service delivery.
According to EACC, it is further alleged that the bribes paid were channeled through a privately-operated mobile money till number, pointing to a coordinated bribery syndicate.
At the time of their apprehension, the officials had just received Ksh2,500 to facilitate the processing of a birth certificate.
”The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Tuesday, 15th April 2025, apprehended two officials from the Kakamega Civil Registration Department for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes from applicants seeking civil registration documents,” EACC shared in a statement.
”It is further alleged that the bribes paid are funnelled through a privately operated mobile till number, pointing to a coordinated bribery syndicate. At the time of their nabbing, the officials had just received Kes2,500 to facilitate the processing of a birth certificate.”
The two were detained at Bungoma Police Station awaiting further processing at the EACC’s Western Regional Offices in Bungoma.
EACC revealed that it has intensified its crackdown on misuse of public resources at service delivery points, acknowledging that bribery not only compromises justice but also hinders citizens’ access to vital services and diminishes trust in public institutions.
On Tuesday, EACC conducted a raid on the home and office of Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi.

During the morning operation, nine senior county officials also had their premises searched in connection with alleged embezzlement of public funds and conflict of interest.
EACC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Abdi Mohamud revealed that a total of Ksh13 million was recovered in cash at the home of the governor, amounts which the graft body believes are proceeds of unscrupulous dealings.
Also in custody with the governor were nine other senior county officials who were facing allegations of conflict of interest, procurement irregularities, and misuse of office in the awarding of a Ksh230 million contract for the supply, delivery, installation, testing, training, commissioning, and support services of an Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.
Those apprehended alongside the governor included the County Secretary, CECs for Finance and Lands, the Chief Officer for Finance, Directors in the Supply Chain and Revenue departments, a clerical officer, and a director of the company awarded the contract.
