Bandits attack of Former Principal Secretary (PS) for Agriculture, Dr. Richard Lesiyampe in Samburu County

Bandits attack of Former Principal Secretary (PS) for Agriculture, Dr. Richard Lesiyampe in Samburu County.

Dr. Richard Lesiyampe, a former principal secretary for agriculture, has requested police involvement following an attack on his home by unidentified armed persons who peppered his house with 20 bullets.

The attack took place at his home in Samburu County where the armed men believed to be bandits started shooting indiscriminately to scare them.

The armed men are thought to be robbers pursuing herds of cattle, according to the villagers. Even the animals of the neighbors were kept in storage at the former PS residence.

According to one witness, the armed men surrounded the area before opening fire near the entrance of the former PS Lesiyampe.

However, the attack was repulsed by a group of police reservists who responded swiftly to prevent further losses. They overpowered the armed men who then took off.

“My home was attacked last night by marauding bandits. Cattle rustling is a primitive method of capital accumulation and this must stop. The landscape of Samburu West is tethered with death and fear,” the former PS stated while revealing that it was a third attack in the area within a week.

“They came and sprayed the house with bullets until I wondered what was going on. They sprayed one house with over 20 bullets,” one of the residents recounted.

“We have lamented ever since elections. Many Samburu residents have lost their lives and even our livestock stolen. We ask the President to intervene,” another resident stated.

The attack came days after a member of the National Police Reserve was shot and seriously wounded in a clash with bandits in Samburu village.

This was as he fought off with 15 bandits who had raided Lolmolog village in Lolmolog location and stole 150 goats.

The reservist confronted the gang but was shot and injured in the process.

He sustained an injury in the thigh as police joined in the fight. The attackers managed to flee and left the animals, police said.

The victim was later rescued and taken to the hospital in stable condition.
