In a statement released on Tuesday, December 16, the agency outlined the circumstances surrounding the fatal road traffic accident that claimed the veteran politician’s life.
According to the DCI, preliminary findings indicate that the accident involved Hon. Jirongo’s motor vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus, registration number KCU 576A, belonging to Climax Company Ltd.
The DCI stated that the collision occurred at approximately 2:19 a.m. and resulted in a head-on impact.
“The collision resulted in a head-on impact that pushed the deceased’s vehicle about 25 metres from the point of impact, while the PSV bus came to a stop approximately 50 metres away,” the statement reads.
The DCI further disclosed that a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory was deployed to the scene.
The team conducted preliminary examinations and secured key exhibits. During the exercise, detectives recovered CCTV footage from the Eagol Petrol Station, which has since been subjected to initial review and analysis.

According to the CCTV footage reviewed so far, Hon. Jirongo drove into the petrol station at 2:18:40 a.m. from the Nairobi direction but did not refuel. At 2:19:10 a.m., he stopped at the station’s exit and, nine seconds later, made a right turn back towards Nairobi.
“At 02:19:25 A.M., the CCTV captured the PSV bus ramming into the deceased’s vehicle,” the DCI said.
Detectives have since interrogated the PSV driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, who had earlier recorded a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. The DCI noted that Githinji has been released on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving.
He is expected to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025, for further police action.
In addition, detectives have interviewed the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom provided personal accounts of the events leading up to the accident.
Investigations remain ongoing, with the forensic team scheduled to revisit the scene for further analysis.
Detectives are also examining Hon. Jirongo’s movements prior to the crash, including statements from individuals who interacted with him that night, notably those present during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.
The DCI added that further analysis of the CCTV footage is underway and that additional statements will be recorded from passengers aboard the Climax Company Ltd bus and other witnesses.
