DCP petitions UN General Assembly to bar President Ruto from addressing the 80th session

Democratic Citizen Party (DCP) has petitioned the United Nations General Assembly to bar President William Ruto from addressing the 80th session
The Democratic Citizen Party (DCP) has petitioned the United Nations General Assembly to bar President William Ruto from addressing the 80th session, accusing him of violating fundamental human rights principles.
Speaking on Monday, August 18, the DCP deputy leader Cleophas Malala asked the UN to deny President Ruto the platform, arguing that granting him the opportunity would legitimize dictatorship and tyranny and betray the young, the women, and the people of Kenya, whose only crime was demanding their rights, justice, and accountability.
“We call upon the UN General Assembly to review his eligibility to speak on peace and human rights matters,” he stated.
Malala challenged President Ruto’s moral authority to address the global assembly on the theme ‘Better Together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights’, citing his administration’s alleged human rights record.
“Mr. Ruto, what will you address the UNGA about this year, considering this year’s theme and the UN principles? Is it about extrajudicial killings, abductions, forced disappearances, rapid support of forces of Sudan, corruption, illegal gold trade, or illegal detentions?” Malala asked.
DCP accused President Ruto of consistently violating the core principles upon which the United Nations was founded and outlined allegations against the Ruto administration, including brutal suppression of peaceful demonstrations and systematic harassment of media personnel.
“We, the Democratic Party, Citizens Party of Kenya, wish to bring to the attention of the global community and the United Nations General Assembly that the President of Kenya has consistently violated the very principles upon which the UN was founded,” Malala stated.

The party escalated its appeal by calling on the United States and international community to take decisive action against President Ruto, including considering persona non grata status and boycotting his international engagements.
“We strongly call on the United States of America, as the host country, to consider declaring him persona non grata in line with international practices on leaders who trample human rights,” Malala concluded.
The petition comes as President Ruto prepares to visit New York for the UN General Assembly session, which will start on September 9, 2025.
Speaking at the UNGA in September last year, President Ruto called for radical reforms in global governance and financial systems, and cited the urgent need to realign global development financing structures to meet the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Ruto criticized the existing global financial architecture, describing it as dysfunctional and increasingly ineffective, particularly in addressing the challenges faced by developing countries.
“The current multilateral system is struggling to address these immense, complex, and dynamic challenges effectively,” Ruto stated. “The global economy faces multiple shocks threatening to undo progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
