Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Lagat has called for urgent mental health support and improved welfare services for police officers deployed in Mandera County.

Speaking on Saturday, August 9, 2025, during a security assessment visit, DIG Lagat said the well-being of officers is crucial for enhancing their work performance in the volatile region.

“We are here this afternoon to assess the security situation within Mandera and to visit our officers and appreciate the work they have been doing in this part of the country,” said DIG Lagat.

He acknowledged that welfare concerns, especially relating to mental health, have been raised strongly and pledged that they will be addressed to improve police efficiency.

DIG Lagat commended the county security team for maintaining relative peace amid recent inter-clan and inter-community clashes.

He assured that most conflicts related to these disputes have been resolved, thanks to the joint efforts of security agencies.

“The security situation in Mandera is good. The recent clashes have been managed well, and most of the issues linked to those clashes have been solved,” he noted.

He urged local communities to continue observing the rule of law and maintain peace, emphasising that “every Kenyan has a right to peace and order wherever they live.” The DIG warned against clanism and divisive community practices that could threaten the region’s stability.

Lagat also praised the collaborative spirit among security agencies, including the Ngao team, the National Police Service, and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), for their coordinated efforts in maintaining security and enabling economic activities to thrive in the area.

He further assured that the concerns raised during the visit would be promptly attended to, reaffirming the government’s commitment to improving conditions for officers on the ground.

“As we prepare for upcoming activities, our priority is to ensure that all welfare issues raised today are addressed,” DIG Lagat concluded, signalling a renewed focus on the mental health and welfare of police personnel in Mandera County.
