Gachagua outlines the police strategy to thwart Raila’s mass action protest scheduled for Monday, March 20.

Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, on Saturday, March 18, detailed that the government would deploy enough security within the Central Business District (CBD) during Raila’s mass action protests scheduled for Monday, March 20.

The Deputy President announced in a statement that police will be stationed in various areas of the CBD to allow Kenyans to go to work and start enterprises.

He said that as they thwart potential acts of violence, the police will protect the CBD’s businesses and property.

The DP also reassured Kenyans of their security and urged city dwellers to carry on with their regular schedules.

“Kenyans should treat those protest calls with contempt and move on with their work as usual; security agencies will provide security to ensure that hardworking and peaceful Kenyans are not disturbed and distracted.

“It is very unpatriotic, irresponsible, and immoral for any leader to call for demonstrations when the Government is working hard to stabilize the economy,” read the statement in part.

Moreover, Gachagua added that the government was working to ensure investors that Kenya was a peaceful country. The police would therefore use all necessary force to stop any disruptions.

On the other hand, police sources intimated that a number of various elite squads, such as the General Service Police Unit (GSU), will be deployed for the demos.

It was stated that in order to curb the plans, the police were also utilising intelligence information to identify potential hotspots for violence.

Security on important routes going to well-known institutions will also be stepped up; according to sources, a police presence, including roadblocks, would be present on the roads leading to the State House.

Security around State Lodges such as Kisumu was already beefed up in readiness for the demos.

Raila, on his part, called on his supporters to carry a white handkerchief that will be waved during the protests as a demonstration of peace.

“We want to ask our supporters to come with white handkerchiefs as a sign of peace,” he announced.
