Mourners accused the pastor of disregarding cultural burial rites during the funeral, sparking outrage.

Chaos erupted in Luandeti in Kakamega after mourners confronted a pastor during a burial ceremony, bringing the event to an unexpected standstill.

This came after the pastor allegedly barred Joseph Wafula, the father of the deceased, from delivering a heartfelt tribute to his son.

Wafula told TV47 that the pastor chose to let a widowed woman speak in his place, a move he said went against their cultural traditions.

In our culture, a parent must speak before an in-law. I disagreed, but the pastor insisted that the widow speak first. That is when the mourners rejected it, saying it was against our cultural norms,” Wafula said.

One mourner said they could not allow the pastor to proceed with the burial ceremony after he failed to honour their traditions.

Another mourner alleged the pastor stood on the grave and hurled curses at the family after sensing the crowd’s anger, prompting them to confront and eject him.

“The pastor stood on the grave and began cursing the family members. He did that for a while. That is when the family members stated that it was not a must to conduct a burial ceremony with the help of the church,” a female mourner said.

“This is not the first time this pastor has done such an act at people’s funerals. He has done that several times. We didn’t want his dictatorship here. That is why we dealt with him,” another mourner said.

After calm was restored, the family chose to proceed with the burial without any involvement from the church.
