The Dutch national caught on camera harassing police officers in Diani, Kwale County, is set to be deported, barely 48 hours after his initial arrest.

In an incident which was caught on video and widely shared on social media, the foreigner was seen behaving aggressively towards police officers after he was apprehended for allegedly assaulting his Kenyan girlfriend.

Preliminary reports indicate the Dutchman was apprehended on October 28 after the assault on a Kenyan woman and vandalisation of a popular guesthouse along Beach Road in Diani township.

Police were alerted by the cottage management, who reported that one of their guests was causing a disturbance. Led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), authorities responded swiftly and apprehended the suspect at the premises, which were five kilometres from Diani Police Station.

A police report indicated that by the time authorities had arrived, security guards had already subdued the suspect and rescued the 32-year-old woman, who has since been taken to Diani Beach Hospital for medical treatment.

Prior to his arrest, the suspect had locked himself inside his room and was initially unwilling to cooperate with officers, who had to spend several minutes persuading him to surrender.

A search of the room led to the discovery of a white substance, believed to be a narcotic drug, which the suspect was using prior to his apprehension.

The suspect appeared to be intoxicated at the time of his arrest and was escorted to Diani Police Station, where he was placed in custody, and more drama ensued.

A video from the police station later surfaced showing the suspect hurling insults and making obscene gestures while threatening the officers, who tried their best to exercise restraint.

On Wednesday morning, the Dutchman addressed the media briefly, where he apologised for his actions but blamed his conduct on a medical condition.

“I had a psychosis episode. I need my medicine. I had not had water and food for a long time,” he said.

He has since been transported to to Kwale Law Courts where he will face charges of assault and illegal stay.
