EACC arrests a lawyer impersonating a judge and soliciting a bribe

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrest a lawyer and a court clerk in Kisumu County over impersonation and soliciting a Ksh500,000 bribe
Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrest a lawyer and a court clerk in Kisumu County over impersonation and soliciting a Ksh500,000 bribe.
According to reports, the advocate and the court clerk were arrested on Friday after being accused of impersonating a judge to defraud a litigant of a bribe.
The two requested the bribe stating that they would relay the same to a judge who was deciding the case according to the EACC.
It was expected that the judge would decide the case in the litigant’s favour, in the May 17 2024 court case.
However, the judge is said to have caught wind of the bribery allegations where the funds had been deposited in the law firm’s accounts.
While exposing the two, the judge noted that the funds were withdrawn by the advocate who is now in police custody.
The EACC however, confirmed that the judge recorded a statement with the anti-corruption watchdog prompting the arrest of the two.

The two are currently detained at the Railway’s Port Police Station pending further action.
This arrest follows that of 11 officials from Vihiga County by EACC on Thursday, June 13, over claims of misappropriating Ksh17 Million.
The eleven who include a Chief Officer and a Director were stated to allegedly misappropriate public funds by stating that there were payments for non-existent works in the purported construction of a Blood Transfusion Centre in the county to help patients requiring blood transfusion.
Additionally, a 12th suspect was also implicated in the case but was on the run at the time of the arrest of the other suspects.
The cases are also falling against the backdrop of a partnership forged between the EACC and the Federal Bureau of Investigations to investigate cases of unexplained wealth stashed abroad.
