The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) confirmed the arrest of a traffic police officer who demanded a ‘forgiveness fee’ to release a matatu.
According to EACC, Dennis Marunga Monyenye, an officer attached at the Kakamega Police Station, had impounded and detained the matatu for picking up passengers from an undesignated area before demanding a fee to release it.
The anti-graft commission noted that the suspect’s arrest followed after the complainant alerted them after he was unable to pay the fee required.
This, according to the commission, was also after numerous complaints received against him.
The commission launched an investigation into the claims arrested the officer and detained him at the Bungoma Police Station pending further action.

“Following investigations into a complaint from matatu operators in Kakamega County, EACC on Friday arrested Monyenye Dennis Marunga, a Traffic Police Rider, based at Kakamega Police Station who impounded and detained a matatu and ordered the complainant to pay him a “forgiveness fee” in order to forgive him and release the detained vehicle,” EACC said in a statement.
EACC disclosed that the suspect famously identified as ‘Denno’ within the matatu industry in the county was notorious for impounding and detaining public service vehicles without cause and later demanding bribes in order to release them.
Further, the commission affirmed its commitment to working with the Office of the Inspector General and other government offices to address the challenge of corruption and extortion on Kenyan roads.
