EACC summons Uhuru’s buddies; David Murathe, Francis Atwoli, and former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo over the land saga.
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has summoned former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, Cotu secretary general Francis Atwoli, and Jubilee vice chairman David Murathe to appear to record a statement.
The three were called in connection with an investigation into a KSh200 million land dispute in Nairobi.
They are charged with receiving the funds via a farm connected to Jirongo.
The farm was compensated financially by Nairobi City County for a plot of land it claimed in the Mukuru slums.
However, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission’s examination revealed that the property in question belonged to a primary school and a pharmacy.
“Those who claimed the money as compensation did not have even a title deed to warrant being paid,” said an official aware of the probe.
And after the farm associated to Jirongo received the money, it is said to have sent some of it to Atwoli and Murathe.
It is the reason the agency wants the two to explain. Atwoli is currently out of the country.
On his part, Atwoli said he had been asked to explain why he received the money that was seen to be illegal compensation.
The farm is said to have demanded to be compensated and received more than Sh200 million.
David Murathe and Francis Atwoli were strong allies of former president Uhuru Kenyatta and a defender of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
In 2020, the EACC summoned David Murathe over the infamous KEMSA scandal after a firm linked to the former Jubilee point man was implicated in the loss of Ksh4 billion by Kemsa for failing to supply Personal Protective Equipment.
