EALA MPs to earn more than their counterparts in the National Assembly and Senate

EALA (East African Legislative Assembly) MPs to earn more in salary and allowances than their counterparts in the National Assembly and Senate.

The National Assembly and Senate on Thursday elected nine individuals to represent Kenya in the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).

The nine are Kennedy Kalonzo, Winnie Odinga, Suleiman Shabal, and Kanini Kega from the Azimio camp as well as Zipporah Kering, Hassan Omar, Mwangi Maina, Dekow Falhada, and David Sankok from the Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

Like Kenyan legislators in the Senate and National Assembly, EALA MPs will get considerable benefits and allowances.

The MPs would receive a gross monthly salary of Ksh1.4 million, plus benefits.

Their gross pay is marginally more than that of Kenyan MPs, who take home about Ksh1 million.

The EALA MPs will also be entitled to a high-end vehicle, which the country is obliged to give.

The EALA MPs will need to travel in order to fulfill their duties, so they will be eligible for some allowances.

According to EALA regulations, each member state must provide more than Ksh840 million to support the operation of the assembly.

There are 45 EALA Members who are indirectly chosen for a five-year term by their respective National Assemblies.

Their role is to discuss anything pertaining to the community and advise the council on how the treaty ought to be implemented.

They may also serve on EALA committees for commerce, investments, regional affairs, legal, agricultural, and tourism while they are in office.
