Eliud Kipchoge finishes sixth in the London Marathon
40-year-old Eliud Kipchoge finishes sixth in the London Marathon as Kenyan Sebastian Sawe wins.
Kenyan marathon legend Elud Kipchoge had a bittersweet end to possibly his last major race, finishing in sixth place in the highly anticipated London Marathon on Sunday, April 27.
Kipchoge, despite being 40 and in the twilight days of his career, beat some formidable names in a marathon dominated by his Kenyan counterpart Sebastian Sawe, who won the marathon with an Impressive world lead of 2:02:28 in his second 42 km marathon ever.
In one of the biggest races this year, the London marathon was graced by over 56,000 runners, including renowned international celebrities, hoping to stamp their mark in the competition.

However, it did not take long before the favourites of the race, including Sawe and Kipchoge, to break away from the rest of the pack. Notably, Kipchoge, whose last win in the London event was in 2019, did remarkably to keep up with his younger counterparts for a large chunk of the race.
The defining moment of the men’s race came at the 1 hour, 30 minute mark when Sawe made the bold move to turn down a drink to focus on the race. By this time, there were hints that the Kenyan would certainly register a top two finish at least.
Sawe’s 35km split time was an impressive 1:41:43, which made his predicted finish drop rapidly as the race wore on.
By the time he crossed the finish line, 29-year-old Sawe clocked an impressive 2:02:26. Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda came in second with a time of 2:03:37, while Alexander Mutiso Munyao came in third with a time of 2:04:20.
Two other runners came above Kipchoge in the London Marathon – the Netherlands’ Abdi Nageeye (2:04:20) who came in fourth, and Tamirat Tola of Ethiopia (2:04:42), who finished in fifth place.
In the women’s event, Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa clocked 2:15:30 to win the Women’s London Marathon in a race in which Kenya’s Joyciline Jepkosgei managed an impressive second-place finish in 2:18:43.
Dutch Olympic marathon champion Sifan Hassan, secured an underwhelming third-place finish in 2:18:59.
