The Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK) has addressed widespread concerns regarding the misuse of the ‘Eng.’ title in an honorary degree awarded to Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi by Northwestern Christian University.
In a statement issued on Monday, December 23, EBK CEO Margaret Ogai emphasized that the title is strictly reserved for Professional and Consulting Engineers who are registered with the EBK.
Consequently, she revealed that the EBK had contacted Northwestern Christian University, urging the institution to revoke the honorary degree certificate.
“The Board has taken swift action by writing to the university and relevant authorities. Northwestern Christian University-Kenya has been advised to recall the honorary degree certificate issued, remove the title ‘Eng.’ from the document, and issue a corrected version.
“The inclusion of the title ‘Eng.’ in this context is unauthorized and constitutes a breach of Sections 26(3) and 47(2) of the Engineers Act, 2011. These provisions prohibit the use of professional engineering titles by unregistered individuals and prescribe penalties for such violations,” she stated.
Ogai clarified that using the title without proper registration is a violation of the law and an infringement of professional standards.

“Unauthorized use of this title undermines the integrity of the engineering profession and is a punishable offense under the Kenyan Constitution. The Board remains committed to safeguarding the standards and credibility of the engineering profession in Kenya,” she added.
Sudi received an Honorary Doctorate Degree in Leadership, Administration, and Management on Saturday, December 21.
However, the honorary certificate included the title “Engineer” before his name, sparking public criticism.
Among those who raised concerns was the Institution of Engineers of Kenya (IEK) president, Engineer Shammah Kiteme, who objected to Sudi’s use of the title without proper engineering qualifications.
“Please note the initial Eng. before anyone’s name is protected by law; Engineers Act 2011. It takes at least 8 years of hard work to earn it. Oscar Sudi, please stop this disrespectful use of a title you haven’t earned,” he stated.
